Contrary to a common assumption that an ordinal scale with several levels can be treated as continuous, our results indicate that it is not so much the number of levels on the ordinal scale but rather the skewness of the distribution that makes a difference on relative performance of linear versus ordinal models. Changes in musical perception on the one side, and style, form and motifs on the other are likely caused by a sum of economic, religious, sociological and political factors and give rise to transitional states, where both forms coexist for some time.
